Setting OneNote Desktop as Default Software

Finding the Default Apps Settings in Windows

If a link to OneNote is opening in the online version instead of your desktop software, you may need to change your default app for that file type.

In the Windows search bar, type "Default App." Select the "Default App" icon.

In the left hand navigation, select "Default Apps."

Setting the OneNote Default App

Scroll all the way to the bottom using the scroll bar on the right side of the window.

Select "Choose default apps by file type"

The file types on the left hand side are alphabetical. Scroll down to "O"

For all OneNote file types, click on the app in the right side of the Window and assign it to OneNote 2016. This is the desktop version of the software.
